The bufonidae is also known as a true toad. this is the only family of anurans in which all members are known as toads, although some may be called frogs. The bufonids now comprise more than 35 genera, bufo being the most widespread and well known. Most notable is the radiation of Stream Toads in rainforest habitats of sabah and sarawak. many bufonids are lowland species, but some may ascend the highlands. Most species in this family are dull in color and live on the land.

Distribution and habitat

Members of this family live throughout much of the world, including all continents except antarctica. True toads are widespread and are native to every continent except Australia and antarctica, inhabiting a variety of environments, from arid areas to rainforest. the other genera are distributed in three tropical areas: South America, Africa, and southeast asia.

Bufonidae characteristics

Bufonids range in size from 20 to more than 200 mm. True toads are toothless and generally warty in look. they need a try of parotoid glands on the rear of their heads. The poison in the glands contains a number of toxins causing different effects. Male toads possess a Bidder’s organ. under the right conditions, the organ becomes an active ovary and the toad, in effect, becomes female.

Characteristics of truth Toads area unit the absence of teeth within the upper jaw, a peculiar structure close to the testes of males, and heavily ossified skulls. they need an odd joint between their lower backbone, or spine, and their hip bones that makes it difficult for the toads to leap well. they will walk or hop short distances, but they cannot leap many feet like some of the opposite species of frogs.
