The natterjack toad is a toad native to sandy and heathland areas of Europe. Natterjack toads are claimed to be Europe’s noisiest amphibian, with the male call audible over several kilometres. Being poor swimmers, they drown in deep water if they can’t get ashore. This species’ natural distribution in ireland is restricted to a handful of coastal habitats in Kerry, though there are a few populations elsewhere in the country as a result of deliberate introductions.

Distribution and habitat

They are commonly found in salt marshes, sand dune systems and lowland heaths. They’re often related to shallow, warm ponds in ridge slacks as they require warmer water in which to breed with success. Natterjack Toad Behavior / Lifecycle

Natterjacks are mostly nocturnal. The natterjack toad spawns between the end of april and july, laying ‘strings’ of eggs in shallow pools. they may lay 3000 – 4000 eggs, which hatch within 5 – 8 days. they are quite aggressive in nature and chase their prey so as to catch them. They rest at their burrow entrances throughout daytime so that they can escape into the burrows if threatened by a potential predator.

Feeding for Natterjack Toad

Adults feed on insects, particularly moths, as well as spiders, woodlice, snails and worms. The tadpoles feed on algae and vegetation till they’re about 38 days old when they begin to feed on animal tissue.
