The Bagot goat is the oldest registered goat in the uk. King richard ii gave the herd to John Bagot on his return from the crusades in the 13th century. Bagot goats were introduced to england at Blithfield Hall in the 1380s. The goats were said to have been given to John Bagot of Blithfield by King Richard II of England to commemorate good hunting the King had enjoyed at Blithfield.

The first account of the breed is of a herd at the Blithfield Estate in Staffordshire owned by Sir John Bagot in 1389. they are a rare breed, with only eighty registered breeding nannies left in britain. Owing to their poor commercial qualities they are seldom kept. The Bagot goat is classified as an historical parkland breed and developed over six centuries as a single isolated herd.

Bagot Goat Characteristics

This ancient native breed is known to have existed continuously since the 1380’s. Bagot goats are small to medium in size. they have long hair, with a distinctive colour pattern being black forequarters and white on the rear part of the body. Some have a white blaze Bagot goats are mostly black at the front and white at the back with long shaggy coats. The colour change should take place around the front shoulder line. Both male and female are horned, the males have larger horns, which sweep back and turn outwards. The overall impression should convey a medium size, strong and well-proportioned animal.

What is use Bagot Goat?

Bagots are mainly used for conservation grazing, or more accurately conservation browsing. Also used for their meat and milk in a limited amount, their smaller size does not provide high monetary returns. Also they do not produce much milk compared to other dairy goat breeds. They have not been selected for meat or milk production and are not noted for their commercial qualities. Their primitive nature means they are hardy and low input. Goats are good at clearing scrub and will usually choose to browse hedges over grazing grass.
