The Broad Breasted White is commercially the most widely used breed of domesticated turkey. These birds have shorter breast bones and larger breasts, sometimes rendering them unable to breed without human assistance.

They produce more breast meat and their pin feathers are less visible when the carcass is dressed due to their white color. These properties have made the breed popular in commercial turkey production but enthusiasts of slow food argue that the development of this breed and the methods in commercial turkey production have come at a cost of less flavor.


Breeding the White Holland and the Broad Breasted Bronze produced the Broad Breasted White Turkey. It has become the dominant turkey on the market and is the one that most Americans are familiar with.

For a time, the Broad Breasted Bronze held the dominant position on the turkey market, but beginning in the 1960s, processors began to prefer the Broad Breasted Whites because they produced a cleaner looking carcass. The fact that their feathers are all white means that their pin feathers are not visible when the bird is dressed.


Tend to have a shorter lifespan than female turkeys (“hens”), typically living.only two to five years. Commercial turkeys, Broad-breasted Whites, are bred to be abnormally large and are free-fed a very high-fat diet, often with antibiotics to promote growth.


  • Gobble, gobble, gobble. A wild turkey’s gobble can be heard a mile away.
  • Young turkeys are called “poults.” Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary informs us that the word “poult” comes from the French “poulet” (chicken), which in turn is a diminutive of “poule,” or hen.
  • Turkeys need to be trained to eat. The University of Arkansas Extension Service explains that turkeys grow the most when they’re trained to eat several small meals a day.
  • The common turkey was probably first domesticated by the Indians of pre-Columbian Mexico.

Hens weigh 14-20 pounds and Toms weigh an average of 30-40 pounds at 20-24 weeks, although they have been known to grow much larger.
