The culpeo, sometimes known as the zorro culpeo or andean fox, is a South american fox species. it is the second largest native canid on the continent, after the maned wolf. This fox was domesticated to form the Fuegian dog, but this became extinct some time between 1880 and 1919.
Distribution and habitat
The fox may be a reddish-grey fox native to South America, wherever it lives during a large choice of habitats, from rain forest to abandon to tableland. they’re found in broad-leaved nothofagus temperate rain forest, sclerophyllous matorral, deserts, and high plateaus, just like the Altiplano, up to the timber line. conjointly found within the forests and grasslands on the western aspect of the mountain range formation in South America.
The cilpeo is that the largest member of the genus Lycalopex. they are grizzled grey in colour on their back and that they are reddish/brown on their head, neck, ears and legs. Their long, bushy tail features a black tip. the realm around the tail is typically darker, typically dark gray. within the winter months, the fur becomes longer and denser. The culpeo average weight is 11.4 kg of male, females average 8.4 kg. Total length will vary from 95 to 132 cm, as well as a tail of 32 to 44 cm in length.

The fox is an opportunistic predator that will take any variety of prey. Prey range from wild ungulates, hares, sheep, and small mammals to insects, birds, and lizards. This fox mainly feeds on rodents and lagomorphs; however, it occasionally feeds on domestic livestock and young guanacos.
