History of Southern platyfish

A live-bearer, it is closely related to the green swordtail and can interbreed with it. it is native to an area of North and Central America stretching from Veracruz, Mexico, to northern Belize they are very peaceful, which makes them great community fish, but they will happily live with their own kind as well. The aquarist can keep a complete rainbow of coloration housing just this one type of fish!

This species has been recorded from Orange County, California, near Westminster; near a fish farm in Conejos County and the south platte drainage, Colorado, several counties in Florida; Hawaii; an unnamed tributary to big Branch bayou in Lacombe, Louisiana; Beaverhead Rock pond (Madison County), Montana; Clark County, Nevada; and texas. it has also been collected in the Loiza drainage near Loiza Reservoir, Quebrada Honda, and rio Abajo Forest Station north of Utuado in Puerto rico.

Platies are members of the Xiphophorus genus. three species are commonly available to the hobbyist. These are the Southern platy Xiphophorus maculatus, also known as Common platy or Moonfish, the Variatus platy or Variable Platyfish Xiphophorus variatus, and their close relative the swordtail.

They come in a massive variety of coloured strains. many fish stores recommend these fish as suitable for first time fish owners. they are easy to look after, but will usually struggle with a cycling tank, and would probably die, so they should not be added to a tank until the cycle has been completed.

Distribution and habitat

X. maculatus is native to mexico, Belize, guatemala and honduras. it has been introduced into at least 18 countries and territories including Australia. Some populations may be X. hellerii x X. maculatus hybrids; florida (Courtenay et al., 1974) and nevada (Nico and Fuller, 2009). they are found in water under dense tree canopies as well as areas that have little to no shade from the sun. Substrate in these locations is typically mud and gravel accompanied by aquatic vegetation.

Xiphophorus maculatus are small freshwater fish that range from the coastal plains of southern mexico near veracruz. Platyfish can be found in streams and drainages as well as in stagnant ponds and shallow temporary pools.

The Southern platy X. maculatus is native to the atlantic coast of mexico and Guatamala, as well as northern honduras. The very rare swordtail platy X. xiphidium inhabits exclusively the rio Soto La marina river system in mexico.

Southern platyfish Temperament / Behavior

The platy is an excellent community fish that is very peaceful but active. It does not look for trouble with other tankmates and enjoys swimming in loosely grouped schools. The males will occasionally squabble amongst themselves but generally without any damage done.

They are a very peaceful tropical fish. Platys are small, lively fish. they are compatible with other active fish of similar size.

This fish can be housed with fish of similar temperament and size that have the same water chemistry requirements. This friendly fish combines well with all good-natured small fishes. armored catfish (Corydoras), Platy fish, Tetras and other Characins make good tankmates.

How to take care?

Feeding for Xiphophorus Mculatus

A flake food diet is a good base for the platy, but should ideally be supplemented with live food. Your platy will survive on flake food alone, but the live food makes the molly more well-nourished and healthier. Bloodworms, micro Worms, Fruit Flies, mosquito larvae, daphnia and chopped up Earthworms are other examples of suitable food for your platy.

These fish are considered omnivorous, but the Platies have a very high herbivorous requirement, and their diet needs to include lots of algae and other vegetation. Feed brine shrimp (either live or frozen), tubifex, or bloodworms as a treat. they will enjoy the proteins, but they must also have plenty of vegetation in their diet. This fish is not a picky eater but should be fed a varied diet several times daily in small amounts.

Health and Diseases:

Platies are generally quite hardy and do not have any particular weaknesses for certain diseases. Platies are subject to the same diseases as other tropical fish. the best way to proactively prevent disease is to give them the proper environment and a well-balanced diet. A stressed fish is more likely to acquire the disease.

Anything you add to your tank can introduce disease. Not only other fish, but plants, substrate, and decorations can harbor bacteria. For information about fish diseases and illnesses, see Aquarium Fish Diseases and treatments.

Best food for fish:

If they don’t eat all the food in a few minutes, you’re giving them too much at once. you can use a flake food diet, but supplement it with live food which offers more nourishment. Specialist fry food is available but any flake food, frozen or live food that floats their way will be easily consumed.
